The end of the school year for schools on the traditional calendar for SDUSD is fast approaching and so is the fiscal year for majority PTA’s across all levels.  For the SDUCPTA, the board members are nearing the end of the first year of their two-year term, which includes me.  I am currently up to my eyeballs in sequins and hairspray as one of the organizations I volunteer for is having their annual Spring Recitals in Balboa Park. However, I have been busy trying to make sure all of the PTA Units under SDUCPTA submit their 2016-2017 Rosters.  It is absolutely imperative that board roster’s are submitted as soon as possible once the PTA Unit has had their elections.  The Ninth District PTA had recently sent an email to PTA Leaders reminding us all of the same thing:

So I will reshare the following:

If no elections was held for the 2016-2017 term of office the following is in effect:

  • If the fiscal year ends with NO election of 2016/17 PTA officers, the council or district PTA must run any election for new officers.
  • Once the term is over, there are no longer PTA officers who may hold an election.
  • All authorized check signers cease to exist. Therefore, checks cannot be written for any purchase or payment of any bills, after the term of office ends. Deposits of checks written to PTA may be made.
  • Your unit may NOT sign contracts for fundraisers or conduct business as there are NO elected PTA officers for the 2016/17 term of office.
  • Letters from the California State PTA, regarding no 2016/17 officer contact, have been mailed to ALL principals of PTAs who have not submitted 2016/17 officer information.

I would also like to add that elections are to be held at an Association Meeting, which is described in the PTA Unit Bylaws, units cannot send home ballots or send out ballots and call that an election as that is basically voting by proxy which is disallowed per the Bylaws.  Ballots are only used when there is more than one person nominated for a position, otherwise a vote by voice by qualified voting members is taken. The SDUCPTA is here to help, but we need to know what the status is.  We can only help if we know what is going on and if I am not available, I will have one of our many leadership team members come out and assist.

If your PTA Unit has had elections and submitted their roster, congratulations!  As now is the time to start planning for the 2016-2017 year.  I am in the process of working with the Ben Vereen Awards and Broadway San Diego to help promote a special program for students in High Schools (and possibly Middle School) in the Wellness Through the Arts Program.   We will have more information on this program and other programs that PTAs can participate in at our Back-to School Breakfast event being held on August 10, 2016 starting at 8 am at the Harold J. Ballard Parent Center.  I am also in conversations with the SDUSD VAPA Department to discuss ways on how we can support schools with a PTA Unit that want o participate in the Reflections program.  I have been in discussions with Office of Youth Advocacy on ways that the SDUCPTA can collaborate with the department to raise awareness about the needs of the LGBTQ+ Student population in SDUSD.  Lastly, I am working with our Vice President of Leadership, NiChelle Cannon, on training dates for PTA Unit officers in the Summer and beyond.  The SDUCPTA’s primary mission is to provide leadership training and support to local PTA leaders at school sites with a PTA Unit in SDUCSD as well as to advocate for all children.   These are just some of the few things that I am working on in addition to what the other officers of SDUCPTA are hoping to accomplish for the 2016-2017 year.   I do look forward to getting to know that next generation of PTA Leaders along with the returning PTA leaders over the summer and beyond.

Please feel free to drop me a line and let me know if you need anything.  I along with my fellow board members of SDUCPTA are here to help!

Faithfully  yours,

Celeste L. Bobryk-Ozaki
