Parents needed for SDUSD VAPA Planning Committee

Parent Representatives Needed!!!

The Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Department are looking for two to three parents  to be a member of their Planning Committee to develop a Strategic Arts Education Plan for San Diego Unified School District. This plan will be developed as a part of the county’s Arts Empower initiative whose vision is that “all students in San Diego County receive a sequential, standards-based arts education that is rooted in all forms of the visual and performing arts.” There has been great success in providing quality, equity and access to arts education for students in other school districts who have gone through this planning process in San Diego County, as well as LA County through Arts for All and Orange County through Arts Advantage. They are excited to bring this planning work to San Diego Unified!

The planning process will be facilitated by Courtney Sawada, Director of SouthCAP, our region’s office for The California Arts Project or TCAP and Pauline Crooks, Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator for the San Diego County Office of Education. Invitees include district visual and performing arts teachers in each arts discipline representing both elementary and secondary grades, elementary multiple subject teachers, administrators, board members, parents, students, arts organization representatives, community and business leaders, and university representatives.
The planning process will take four days spread over the course of three months. Those  who submit their names and are invited are asked to commit to attending all of the time at each of the four sessions.  San Diego Unified Council of PTAs are always looking to encourage our PTA members to serve as the Parents’ Voice
The planning meetings will take four full days, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and take place at the VAPA office at the Instructional Media Center (IMC). The dates are February 4, March 1, March 22 and May 3.
If you are interested, willing and able to attend all four of these planning sessions, please send an email to Margaret Lathan at as soon as possible
